The kouprey is a wild bovid native to Southeast Asia, today extremely rare and considered by many to be extinct in the wild. Like other bovids, it can be infested with roundworms (nematodes) that lodge in its stomach and intestines.
These parasites feed on blood or nutrients drawn from the animal's digestive tract. Heavy infestation fatigues the animal, slows its growth, and can seriously weaken young animals or those already in poor condition.
This sheet is based on established knowledge in domestic cattle, which are very closely related to kouprey, in the absence of abundant specific data on this endangered species.

Persistent diarrhea is often observed, sometimes with soft or liquid stools. The animal progressively loses weight despite initially preserved appetite, which later diminishes.
The coat becomes dull and rough. General fatigue develops, with decreased activity.
In young animals, growth retardation is a common sign. In severe infestations, swelling under the jaw (edema) may appear, pale mucous membranes due to anemia, and dehydration.
The abdomen may seem painful or swollen to the touch in some cases.

Causes and risk factors
Gastrointestinal parasitism in kouprey is caused by nematodes (roundworms) belonging to several families well known in bovids, notably gastrointestinal strongyles (such as Haemonchus, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus) and other related genera.
These adult worms live in the abomasum (one of the stomachs) or the intestines. Females lay eggs shed in feces, which develop into infective larvae on pasture before being ingested by the animal while grazing.
Young animals and individuals that are weak, sick, or stressed are more susceptible.
Overgrazing, wet soil, and warm weather favour the survival of larvae on pasture. A high density of animals in the same area increases the risk of infection.
Confinement in a restricted enclosure, a common situation for this endangered species maintained in conservation programmes, can also promote the buildup of parasites on limited ground.
Transmission
Transmission occurs by oral route: the animal ingests infective larvae present on grass or soil, originating from eggs shed in the feces of infested animals.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical examination and faecal analysis (coproscopy) to count parasite eggs and identify the families involved.
In some cases, a blood test may be useful to assess the degree of anaemia or the animal's general condition.
Additional diagnostic tests may be recommended if symptoms are severe or do not respond to initial treatment.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the use of antiparasitic agents (dewormers) from different classes, selected by the veterinarian according to the type of parasite identified.
Nutritional support and, if needed, rehydration can accompany treatment in weak animals.
The choice of drug and the frequency of treatments must be decided by a veterinarian, particularly in such a rare and fragile species as the kouprey.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Pasture management is essential: avoid overgrazing, rotate grazing areas, and limit the number of animals per surface area.
Regular veterinary monitoring with faecal parasite testing allows detection of an infection before clinical signs appear.
Preventive antiparasitic treatments can be put in place on a schedule established by a veterinarian, taking into account the local climate and level of risk.
Good nutrition and low-stress living conditions strengthen the animal's natural resistance to parasites.

Severe untreated infection can lead to significant anaemia, marked weight loss, and general weakness in the animal.
In young individuals, this may permanently compromise growth. In extreme cases, the animal may die, especially if other diseases or stress are superimposed on the parasitism.

Dull coat associated with reduced activity.

Prognosis
The outlook is generally good if the infestation is detected and treated early, with gradual return to normal health.
The outlook becomes more guarded in cases of heavy infestation, in young animals, or when other stressors or diseases are present. Given the extreme rarity of the kouprey, each case warrants special attention for the conservation of the species.
