Gastrointestinal parasitism by roundworms (nematodes) is a very common condition in bighorn sheep, whether wild or kept in captivity. These small worms live in the stomach (aboma) and intestines of the animal. They feed on blood or tissue and disrupt digestion. Almost all bighorn sheep carry a small parasitic load without problem, but it can become dangerous under stress, overpopulation or poor nutrition.

The signs depend on the number of worms present. \n\nWith a light load, the animal often shows no visible symptoms. \n\nWith a greater load, we observe progressive weight loss despite a sometimes preserved appetite, dull and pitted hair, diarrhea or loose stools, a drop in vitality and stunted growth in young people. \n\nIn severe cases, particularly with blood-sucking worms like Haemonchus, the animal may present pale mucous membranes (sign of anemia), a sometimes swollen belly, great weakness and dehydration. These serious cases can lead to death, especially in lambs or weakened animals.

Causes and risk factors
Several species of gastrointestinal nematodes are involved, including Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Ostertagia, Teladorsagia, and Nematodirus. These worms lay eggs which are passed in the stool. These eggs develop into infesting larvae on the pasture, which the animal then ingests while grazing. The cycle thus continues between the soil and the animal.
Young animals, females at the end of gestation or lactating, and individuals weakened by stress or other illness are the most vulnerable. \n\nOverpopulation, grazing on damp or overexploited plots, promiscuity with domestic sheep or goats (which share the same parasites), and hot and humid seasons favor the multiplication of larvae on the ground and increase the risk of massive infestation.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The diagnosis is based on a laboratory analysis of stools (coproscopy) which makes it possible to count the parasite eggs and identify the genera involved. \n\nThe veterinarian can complete this examination with a blood test to assess the degree of anemia and the general condition of the animal, as well as a complete clinical examination.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the administration of antiparasitics (wormers) belonging to different families, chosen by the veterinarian according to the type of parasite identified and known local resistance. \n\nNutritional support and sometimes iron supplementation may be offered in cases of marked anemia. Grazing management systematically accompanies drug treatment.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Grazing management is essential: avoid overgrazing, alternate plots and limit the density of animals. \n\nLimiting contact between wild or captive bighorn sheep and small domestic ruminants reduces the cross-transmission of parasites. \n\nRegular veterinary monitoring with stool analyzes makes it possible to monitor the parasitic load and treat only if necessary, which also avoids the development of resistance to antiparasitic drugs.
Possible complications
A severe and untreated infestation can lead to profound anemia, permanent growth retardation in young animals, general weakening leading to other diseases, and in extreme cases, death of the animal.
When to see a veterinarian
The animal visibly loses weight despite a normal or preserved appetite.\nThe stools become persistently loose or diarrheal.\nThe fur becomes dull, prickly or the animal appears defeated without obvious cause.\nA young animal shows marked growth retardation.\nThe mucous membranes (gums, eyelids) appear pale.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when parasitism is detected early and treated appropriately. It becomes more reserved in cases of severe anemia, in young animals or when the infestation is associated with significant stress or other concomitant diseases.
Frequently asked questions
Can a mouflon without symptoms still carry worms?
Yes, this is even the most common situation. Most bighorn sheep harbor a small amount of worms without showing any visible signs. The problem arises when the parasite load increases sharply.
Can bighorn sheep transmit these worms to domestic sheep?
Yes, these nematodes are shared between wild bighorn sheep and small domestic ruminants such as sheep and goats. The close contact between the two favors this cross-transmission.
Can we prevent this parasitism without medication?
Grazing management (rotation, limited animal density) considerably reduces the risk, but veterinary monitoring with stool analyzes remains recommended to adapt management.
Why should you not deworm systematically without veterinary advice?
Repeated and untargeted use of antiparasitic drugs promotes the appearance of resistance in parasites, making future treatments less effective. A prior diagnosis allows for fairer treatment.
