Intestinal parasitism by pinworms is a very common condition in the Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca), whether wild or captive. \nPinworms are small roundworms (nematodes) that live in the large intestine of the turtle. \nIn most healthy turtles, a small population of pinworms is present without causing any visible problem: this is called parasitic balance. \nThe concern arises when this number increases too much, often due to stress, insufficient hygiene or weakened immunity. This is when signs of illness may appear.

Most turtles carrying pinworms show no signs. \nWhen the parasitic load becomes too high, we can observe a drop in appetite, progressive weight loss despite a sometimes preserved appetite, abnormal stools (soft, smelly, sometimes with mucus), a stomach that appears swollen or bloated, and a general drop in tone. \nIt also happens that we see small threadlike white worms, resembling fine threads, directly in the excrement or around the cloaca.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by nematodes of the pinworm family (notably the Tachygonetria and related genera), specific to turtles. \nThese worms lay very resistant eggs which are passed in the stools and can survive for a long time in the environment (soil, substrate, enclosure).
Stress (transport, change of environment, improper hibernation), an unbalanced diet, an overcrowded or unhygienic enclosure, young age, immunity weakened by another disease, and cohabitation with other turtles increase the risk of the parasite load becoming excessive.
Transmission
Contamination occurs orally, by ingesting eggs present in the substrate, drinking water or plants soiled by infested stools. \nThe cycle is direct, that is to say it does not require an intermediate host: a turtle can reinfest itself in a poorly cleaned enclosure, and contamination between cohabiting turtles is frequent.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The diagnosis is based on a coprological analysis (examination of the stool under a microscope) carried out by the veterinarian, which makes it possible to search for and count pinworm eggs. \nA simple visual examination of the stool is not sufficient to confirm the disease, as the presence of a few worms may be normal.
Treatment
Treatment is based on the administration of an antiparasitic suitable for reptiles, prescribed only by the veterinarian after confirmation of the diagnosis. \nA stool check after treatment is often recommended to check its effectiveness. \nIt is important to never treat a turtle systematically without veterinary advice, because unnecessary or poorly dosed deworming can disrupt the animal's digestive balance.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Regular cleaning of the enclosure and the water tank limits the accumulation of eggs in the environment. \nAvoiding overpopulation and isolating new turtles before integrating them into the group (quarantine) reduces the risk of cross-contamination. \nRegular parasite control by stool analysis at the veterinarian, particularly before and after hibernation, makes it possible to identify an excessive load before the appearance of symptoms. \nA suitable diet and little stress strengthen the turtle's natural resistance.
Possible complications
In the event of a heavy infestation left untreated, dehydration, severe weight loss, intestinal obstruction in extreme cases, and general weakening may appear, making the turtle more vulnerable to other diseases.

Stools are abnormally loose, smelly, or contain mucus.
Worms are visible in the stool or near the cloaca.
The turtle loses weight or appears abnormally dejected.
Before and after hibernation, as part of a routine check.
Prognosis
The prognosis is generally good when the disease is detected and treated in time. \nA mild infestation in an otherwise healthy turtle often does not require immediate treatment. \nOn the other hand, a high neglected parasitic load can lead to lasting weakening, or even put the life of the animal at risk in severe cases.
Frequently asked questions
Should all turtles be systematically dewormed?
No. The presence of small amounts of pinworms is normal and does not always warrant treatment. Only a stool examination by the veterinarian allows you to know if treatment is necessary.
Are turtle pinworms transmissible to humans or other animals?
No, these pinworms are specific to turtles and are not transmitted to humans or dogs or cats.
How do I know if my turtle has too many worms?
Only a stool analysis carried out by a veterinarian can measure the parasitic load. The simple observation of worms in the stool is not enough to judge the severity.
Does hibernation cause parasite problems?
Yes, the stress of hibernation and a slowed immune system can lead to an increase in parasites. A check before and after hibernation is recommended.
