Walrus pneumonia is an infectious inflammation of the lungs affecting this marine species, most commonly seen in animals held in captivity (zoos, wildlife rehabilitation centers) or in weakened wild individuals. It is an infection of the deep respiratory tract that impairs oxygen exchange. This is a serious condition because the walrus is a large animal whose respiratory capacity must remain efficient, especially during diving.

Walrus pneumonia can result from bacterial infection (several opportunistic germs found in the marine environment or in enclosures may be responsible), sometimes triggered by a prior viral infection that weakens the respiratory tract, or by inhalation of foreign material or fluid (aspiration). Parasitic lung infection can also play a triggering or worsening role in some individuals.
Stress from captivity, inadequate environmental conditions (poor water quality, improper temperature), a weakened immune system from age, malnutrition, or underlying illness increase the risk. Young animals and elderly individuals are generally more vulnerable. Recent injury or surgery can also promote secondary lung infection.
