Avian polyomavirus is a contagious viral disease that affects many species of birds, including the rosethroat lovebird (Agapornis roseicollis). It is caused by a virus belonging to the Polyomaviridae family, specific to birds.\n\nThis disease mainly affects young chicks, particularly those aged a few days to a few weeks, in whom it can cause sudden death. In adult birds, the infection may remain silent or cause more discreet signs.\n\nThe virus attacks several internal organs such as the liver, kidneys, heart and bone marrow, which explains the diversity of symptoms observed.

In young unweaned lovebirds, the disease often progresses very quickly, sometimes within a few hours, and can lead to death without clear warning signs.\n\nWhen signs are visible, we can observe: marked depression, refusal to eat, a swollen belly (due to liver damage), tremors, difficulty moving or paralysis, as well as stunted growth of the feathers.\n\nHemorrhages under the skin, visible especially on the unfeathered belly of nestlings, are sometimes noted. In older or adult birds, the infection may go unnoticed or be limited to a simple temporary depression.

Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by an avian polyomavirus (Avian Polyomavirus), a resistant virus in the environment. It multiplies in several tissues of the bird, including the liver, skin, developing feathers and the immune system.
Young, unweaned birds, particularly those raised in groups on farms or pet stores, are most at risk. Promiscuity between several breeding pairs or between chicks of different litters increases the risk of contamination.\n\nA still immature immune system in the young inseparable makes it particularly vulnerable. Stress, insufficient hygiene of nest boxes and breeding equipment also promote the spread of the virus.
Transmission
The virus is transmitted by direct contact between birds, but also indirectly via droppings, feather dust, secretions, contaminated breeding equipment or soiled food. Parents can transmit the virus to their chicks during feeding or by contamination of the nest. The virus can survive for a long time in the environment, making disinfection essential.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian relies on clinical signs, but above all on additional analyzes because symptoms alone cannot confirm the disease. Laboratory tests (search for the virus by PCR on blood, droppings or feathers) can confirm the infection. An autopsy can be offered in the event of death to identify the exact cause, which also helps to protect other birds in the flock.
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment against Avian polyomavirus. The care is essentially supportive: fluid therapy, nutritional support, maintaining heat and treatment of possible complications (secondary infections) using antibiotics if necessary. Immediate isolation of the sick bird is essential to protect others.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based above all on strict hygiene of cages, nest boxes and feeders, with regular disinfection adapted to resistant viruses.\n\nAny new bird introduced into a farm should be isolated (quarantine) several weeks before any contact with others, with a veterinary check if possible.\n\nA vaccine exists for certain species of birds and can be discussed with an avian veterinarian, particularly in farms where the disease has already been detected. Limiting the density of birds and avoiding the mixing of broods of different origins also reduces the risks.
Vaccination
A vaccine against avian polyomavirus exists for certain species of caged birds. Its use in the rosebreasted lovebird must be discussed with a veterinarian specializing in avians, particularly in farms at risk or having already experienced cases.
Possible complications
Liver damage can progress to liver failure. Nervous or motor disorders can leave after-effects in survivors. A lasting abnormality in feather growth is possible in young that survive the infection. The virus can also persist in the body and be excreted intermittently, making the bird a carrier for other conspecifics.

A baby bird suddenly becomes despondent or refuses to eat.\nThe baby bird's belly appears swollen or purplish marks appear under the skin.\nTremoring, paralysis or difficulty moving are observed.\nA bird from the breeding stock dies suddenly without apparent cause.\nAbnormal feathers or stunted feather growth are noted in a young bird.
Prognosis
The prognosis is poor for very young chicks, in which mortality can be significant and rapid. In older or adult birds, the infection is often less severe or even silent, but the bird can still carry the virus and transmit it to others.
