Behaviour

The dog is a social and gregarious animal that naturally lives in packs. It is strongly attached to its owners and other members of its group, and develops lasting emotional bonds. Dogs are playful, curious, and may be aggressive or fearful depending on their training and socialization.

Reproduction

Dogs reach sexual maturity between 6 and 12 months depending on the breed. Females have seasonal reproductive cycles with heat occurring typically twice a year. Gestation lasts approximately 63 days, and females give birth to litters of 3 to 8 puppies on average.

Peculiarities

Dogs possess exceptional hearing, capable of detecting sounds at frequencies far beyond human perception. Their sense of smell is up to 100,000 times more sensitive than humans, making them invaluable for detection tasks. They also use complex vocal communication (barking, growling, howling) and body language.

Threats and conservation

As a domesticated animal, the dog is not threatened with extinction. However, populations of stray or feral dogs may create localized health and ecological concerns.

Numbers and trends vary across sources and regions. See the IUCN assessment for the latest reference data.
