The Goldfish is a small freshwater cyprinid native to East Asia, domesticated for over a thousand years. Characterized by its shiny coat, generally bright orange, it has become one of the most popular ornamental fish in the world, prized for its charm and ease of maintenance in the aquarium.

The Goldfish has a compact, ovoid body, covered in smooth, shiny scales. Its coloring varies from golden to bright orange, sometimes with white or black spots depending on the varieties selected. It features a unique dorsal fin and a characteristic forked tail.

Habitat and distribution

Goldfish thrives in the calm, well-oxygenated waters of temperate lakes and rivers. In the wild, it prefers shallow areas, rich in aquatic vegetation. In captivity, it adapts to spacious aquariums with filtration, benefiting from a temperature between 10 and 20°C.

Behaviour

The Goldfish is active and curious, constantly swimming in search of food. It is gregarious and enjoys the company of other conspecifics, creating a stable social hierarchy. It responds well to training and recognizes its owners, showing remarkable intelligence for a small fish.

Reproduction

The Goldfish reaches sexual maturity around 2-3 years old. Breeding occurs in spring when the temperature increases. The male chases the female and stimulates her to release her eggs, which are then fertilized. Young fry emerge in 5 to 7 days depending on water temperature.

Peculiarities

The Goldfish has remarkable memory ability and can remember its environment and its feeders. It can live for several decades in optimal conditions, much longer than many enthusiasts believe. Some selected varieties have elongated fins or spectacular protruding eyes.

Threats and conservation

Goldfish does not face significant threats in the wild, as relict natural populations are few in number. However, in an aquarium, it can suffer from parasitic diseases or lack of maintenance. The species is classified as Least Concern by the IUCN.
