The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ once told his companions the story of a woman who was punished for her treatment of a simple cat. This account, passed down through generations, remains one of the most striking teachings about human responsibility toward animals in one's care.

The Account Related by the Prophet ﷺ

According to a hadith recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ stated that a woman was punished because she had confined a cat until it starved to death. On account of this, she entered the Hellfire. It was specified that she had given it neither food nor drink throughout its confinement, nor had she freed it so it could hunt and feed on the small creatures of the earth.

This hadith highlights a fundamental principle: when a human being takes an animal under their care—whether domestic or not—they incur a duty of care toward it. Depriving a creature of food while preventing it from meeting its own needs constitutes grave injustice in Islam's view, regardless of the animal's size or apparent insignificance.

A Universal Lesson on Responsibility

Scholars commenting on this hadith emphasize that the punishment mentioned is not tied to simply keeping a cat in one's home, but rather to the cruelty and negligence the woman showed. It is reported that this account was transmitted notably by the companions Abdullah ibn Umar and Abou Hourayra, who stressed the gravity of this act in God's sight.

This hadith is often placed alongside another well-known report—that of a man forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog, also found in authentic collections. Together, these two traditions draw a coherent picture: mercy toward animals is rewarded, while cruelty toward them is severely condemned, regardless of the belief or nature of the person involved.

Some scholars also recall that this hadith does not condemn the woman for keeping a cat in her home, but precisely for confining it without offering any means of survival. The distinction is essential: owning or sheltering an animal naturally carries the obligation to meet its essential needs—whether food, water, or freedom of movement when necessary for its survival.

This hadith has endured across centuries as a powerful reminder that kindness toward creatures depends neither on their size nor on their apparent usefulness to humans. A cat, an ant, or a bird all deserve the same fundamental respect: that their vital needs be considered by whoever has authority over them.
