Vibrio infection is a bacterial disease common in reef octopus (Octopus cyanea), whether in the wild or in captivity (aquarium, breeding tank). Bacteria of the Vibrio genus are naturally present in sea water. They become pathogenic when the animal is weakened, stressed or injured, causing skin lesions, tissue necrosis and sometimes fatal septicemia.\nThis infection is considered opportunistic: it takes advantage of a weakness in the animal to develop rapidly.

The first signs are often discreet: the octopus becomes less active, hides more and loses its appetite.\nSkin lesions gradually appear: small whitish or brownish spots, ulcerations, areas of skin that become detached or wounds that do not heal.\nThe skin may appear swollen or have necrotic areas (dead tissue, often grayish or blackish).\nIn advanced cases, the animal swims abnormally, loses its usual coloring and its muscle tone, and can die in a few days if the infection reaches the general circulation (sepsis).\nCertain octopuses rub against the decor or walls, a sign of irritation or itching linked to the lesions.

Causes and risk factors
The infection is due to bacteria of the Vibrio genus (notably Vibrio splendidus, Vibrio alginolyticus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and related species), naturally present in sea water and on the skin of healthy cephalopods.\nThese bacteria become pathogenic when the balance of the animal or its environment is disturbed: a wound, a burn, stressful handling or poor quality water open the door to uncontrolled bacterial proliferation.
Stress (transport, handling, aggressive cohabitation with other animals) is a major triggering factor.\nDegraded water quality (too high temperature, poor oxygenation, accumulation of organic waste, unstable salinity) favors the proliferation of Vibrio.\nAny skin injury, even minimal, constitutes an entry point for the bacteria.\nAn immune system weakened by another disease, an unsuitable diet or prolonged captivity in poor conditions also increases the risk.
Diagnosis and care
Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.
The veterinarian specializing in aquatic or exotic animals examines the animal and its environment (water quality, recent history).\nThe definitive diagnosis often requires a sample of the lesions for bacteriological analysis in the laboratory, making it possible to identify the Vibrio species in question and to test its sensitivity to treatments.\nIn certain cases, an autopsy is carried out on deceased animals to confirm the infection and guide the treatment of other individuals in the same pool.
Treatment
Treatment is based on antibiotics adapted to marine bacteria, prescribed only by a veterinarian after identification, if possible, of the germ.\nImmediate improvement in water quality and reduction of stress are essential in addition to drug treatment.\nLocal treatment of lesions can be offered depending on their extent.\nIsolation of the sick animal helps avoid contamination of other octopuses in the pond.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based above all on excellent water quality: stable temperature, good oxygenation, effective filtration and regular monitoring of parameters (ammonia, nitrites, salinity).\nThe animal's stress must be limited as much as possible: gentle and rare handling, careful transport, absence of aggressive co-habitants.\nAny injury must be closely monitored, because it can quickly develop into an infection.\nQuarantining new animals before introduction into a common pool helps limit the spread between individuals.

Without treatment, the infection can progress to generalized septicemia, often fatal within a few days.\nExtensive skin lesions can become secondarily infected by other microorganisms.\nTissue necrosis can affect deep organs in a very weakened animal.

Transmission to humans
Certain species of Vibrio present in marine cephalopods can occasionally infect humans, particularly through contact with a skin wound or when handling animals or contaminated water. The risk mainly concerns people who are immunocompromised or have cuts. It is advisable to wash your hands after handling and protect any wounds before contact with sea water or sick animals.
Prognosis
The prognosis depends on the speed of treatment. Detected early and associated with improved living conditions, the infection can be brought under control.\nAt an advanced stage, with septicemia or extensive necrosis, the prognosis becomes guarded to grim, with the naturally short life expectancy of the reef octopus further complicating recovery.

Yes, Vibrio bacteria spread easily in water. It is recommended to isolate any animal with suspicious lesions and monitor the other occupants of the pool.
