Presentation
The cuttlefish is a marine cephalopod belonging to the mollusk group, renowned for its exceptional camouflage abilities and developed intelligence. It lives mainly in temperate and tropical coastal waters, where it hunts fish and crustaceans. Its soft body is supported by a distinctive internal bone, the cuttlebone, used notably as a calcium supplement for domestic birds. A discreet predator, it plays an important role in coastal marine ecosystems and also represents an appreciated fishery resource in the Mediterranean, including in Tunisia.
The cuttlefish has an oval flattened body bordered by a continuous undulating fin, eight arms and two retractile tentacles equipped with suckers. It has a calcareous internal bone, the cuttlebone, which regulates its buoyancy. Its skin contains chromatophores, pigment cells that it controls nervously to rapidly change color and pattern. Its eyes, W-shaped, provide highly developed vision despite limited color perception.
Characteristics
Indicative values: they vary by subspecies, sex and region.
Habitat and distribution
The cuttlefish frequents sandy or muddy bottoms in shallow coastal zones, as well as seagrass beds where it can hide. It also favors rocky coastal areas offering shelter. Some species migrate to deeper waters in winter.
CURRENT RANGE
The common cuttlefish is widely distributed along European and African Atlantic coasts and throughout the Mediterranean Sea, including the coasts of Tunisia. Other cuttlefish species inhabit coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific. It is absent from very deep waters and the coldest oceans.
Behaviour
The cuttlefish is a solitary hunter, most active at dusk and night, capable of remaining motionless by partially burying itself in the sand to surprise its prey. It communicates through rapid changes in skin color and texture, serving for camouflage, intimidation and courtship display alike. When facing danger, it can eject a cloud of black ink and escape by jet propulsion. Its intelligence is notable among invertebrates, with learning and memory abilities studied in the laboratory.
Reproduction
Reproduction occurs mainly in spring and summer, preceded by a colorful courtship display where the male displays contrasting patterns to attract the female and intimidate rivals. The female lays several hundred black eggs in clusters, attached to surfaces such as seaweed or fishing nets. After spawning, most adults die, completing a semelparous life cycle.
Peculiarities
The cuttlefish can change color and texture in a fraction of a second thanks to its chromatophores, an ability among the fastest in the animal kingdom. Its blood is blue due to the presence of copper-based hemocyanin rather than hemoglobin. Cuttlebone, found on beaches, is traditionally used as a calcium supplement for caged birds.
Threats and conservation
The cuttlefish is exploited by commercial fishing for its meat, which can locally affect certain populations. Degradation of coastal habitats, such as seagrass beds, poses a threat to its breeding grounds. It remains nonetheless a common species, not considered threatened globally.
