Avian malaria is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the Plasmodium genus (close to those responsible for human malaria, but specific to birds). These parasites infect the red blood cells and some internal organs of birds. In the bald ibis, a rare and endangered species subject to intensive conservation programs, this disease is particularly feared because it can cause significant mortality, particularly during reintroductions or transfers to new habitats where the birds have no prior immunity.\n\nThe disease is transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes, mainly of the Culex genus, which act as vectors by transporting the parasite from an infected bird to a healthy bird.

The clinical signs of Avian malaria are often non-specific, making diagnosis difficult without a veterinary examination.\n\nThe affected bird may appear depressed, less active than usual, and refuse to eat. A progressive weight loss is frequently observed.\n\nThe destruction of red blood cells by the parasite leads to anemia: the mucous membranes (mouth, around the eyes) may appear pale instead of their usual pinkish color.\n\nIn severe forms, breathing difficulties, tremors, or even convulsions may appear, particularly if the parasite reaches the brain. Some birds have a fever.\n\nThe most serious form can lead to the death of the bird within a few days, sometimes without very significant warning signs, which is particularly worrying for a species as valuable as the bald ibis.

Causes and risk factors

The disease is caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium (several species can affect birds, of which Plasmodium relictum is one of the most studied and most pathogenic). The parasite carries out part of its life cycle in the red blood cells and tissues of the bird, and another part in the mosquito vector.

Certain factors increase the risk of infection or serious form: the presence of mosquito vectors in the environment, particularly in humid areas or after rain; hot periods favoring the reproduction of mosquitoes; young age or a weakened immune system; stress related to transport, captivity or reintroduction to a new environment; and the absence of previous exposure to the parasite which deprives the bird of partial immunity. Captive or semi-free populations intended for the conservation of the bald ibis are particularly monitored because an infection can have a disproportionate impact on an already small population.

Transmission

The parasite is transmitted exclusively by the bite of mosquitoes (vectors), mainly of the Culex genus. There is no direct transmission from one bird to another without passage through the insect vector.

Diagnosis and care

Diagnosis is the veterinarian's responsibility, based on clinical examination and laboratory tests. Care is decided case by case.

The veterinarian suspects the disease based on suggestive clinical signs (dejection, pallor, weight loss) associated with a risky context (presence of mosquitoes, hot season, captive population).\n\nThe definitive diagnosis is based on a microscopic examination of a blood smear allowing the parasite to be visualized inside the red blood cells. More sensitive molecular tests (PCR) can also be used in laboratories specializing in wildlife, making it possible to detect the parasite even in small quantities.

Treatment

The treatment is based on specific antiparasitic molecules active against Plasmodium, prescribed only by a veterinarian specializing in wildlife or exotic birds. Supportive treatments may be associated: fluids to combat dehydration, nutritional support, and sometimes blood transfusion in cases of severe anemia. Treatment must be rapid given the fragility of the species.

Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.

Prevention

Prevention is based above all on the fight against mosquitoes: elimination of stagnant water around aviaries and accommodation sites, use of mosquito nets or nets on enclosures, particularly at night when certain mosquitoes are most active.\n\nRegular veterinary surveillance of captive or semi-free populations allows early detection. Routine blood tests can be carried out as part of conservation programs.\n\nDuring transfers or reintroductions, quarantine and a prior health assessment are recommended to limit the introduction of the parasite into a new area or population.

Possible complications

Severe anemia can lead to failure of vital organs. Injury to the central nervous system by the parasite can cause convulsions and rapid death. In an already critically endangered species like the bald ibis, each death has a significant impact on the viability of the population.

Prognosis

The prognosis strongly depends on the precocity of treatment. Detected early, the bird can recover with appropriate treatment and support. In severe forms or in the absence of treatment, the prognosis is poor, the disease can be fatal within a few days. Once cured, some birds may remain latent carriers of the parasite without clinical signs, which remains a subject of surveillance in conservation programs.

Can avian malaria be transmitted to humans?

No. The Plasmodium responsible for avian malaria are different species from those which infect humans. There is no risk of transmission to humans.
