Theileriosis is a disease caused by small blood parasites called Theileria. These parasites are transmitted by ticks and mainly attack the white blood cells then the red blood cells of the infected animal.\n\nIn domestic cattle, this disease is well known and sometimes serious, particularly in East Africa. Grant's gazelle, like other wild African antelopes, may be exposed to the same ticks carrying the parasite in its natural environment.\n\nAmong wild antelopes in general, some species of Theileria circulate without causing visible disease: the animal harbors the parasite but remains apparently healthy. These wild species can then act as a reservoir, that is to say a source of the parasite for ticks which can then transmit it to other animals, including domestic livestock.\n\nScientific documentation on theileriosis in Grant's gazelle specifically remains limited. Causes and risk factors
The disease is caused by protozoa of the genus Theileria, microscopic parasites that live inside blood cells. Several species of Theileria exist, some more pathogenic than others depending on the host concerned.
The presence of vector ticks in the environment is the main risk factor. Grazing areas shared between wildlife and domestic livestock encourage the exchange of parasites.\n\nA stressed, young, weakened or immunocompromised animal could develop a more marked form of the disease, although this remains little documented in Grant's gazelle in particular.\n\nThe wet season, favorable to the reproduction of ticks, generally increases the risk of exposure.
Transmission

The treatment involves specific antiparasitic treatments directed against protozoa, prescribed and adapted by a veterinarian according to the animal species and severity.\n\nSupportive care may be necessary in severe cases: fluids to combat dehydration, nutritional support, and close monitoring.\n\nThe fight against ticks present on the animal is also part of the treatment, to avoid immediate reinfection.
Treatment depends on the cause and the animal's condition: it must be determined by a veterinarian. No self-medication.
Prevention
Prevention is based above all on the fight against ticks: regular inspection of the coat, appropriate external antiparasitic treatments recommended by a veterinarian, and management of the environment to limit the presence of ticks (vegetation, litter).\n\nIn the context of a zoo or reserve, regular health monitoring and careful management of contacts between wildlife and domestic livestock help to reduce the risk of cross-transmission.
Possible complications
In severe forms, significant anemia, lung damage or general failure of the body can occur. In susceptible species, the disease can be fatal in the absence of treatment.\n\nIn Grant's gazelle, in the absence of abundant specific data, it is prudent to consider that a severe form remains possible in a weakened animal, even if silent carriage seems more frequent.

Prognosis

Can Grant's gazelle transmit theileriosis to livestock?
It does not directly transmit the parasite. It is the ticks that make the link: an infected tick on a carrying gazelle can then bite a bovine and transmit the parasite to it.
Is a gazelle carrying Theileria necessarily sick?
No. In many wild antelopes, the parasite can be present in the blood without causing visible symptoms. We're talking about silent carrying.
How to protect a gazelle in captivity against this disease?
